Blowfly Strike Prevention for Sheep!

Blowfly Strike Prevention for Sheep!

Blowfly

Blowfly is the main external parasite affecting sheep in the summer months. More likely to occur in warmer, humid weather, the blowfly season is starting earlier and lasting longer than before1. If left untreated, fly strike can be fatal.

Causes

  • Three species of fly can attack sheep in the UK:
  • Lucilia sericata (Greenbottle) - most common species
  • Lucilia caesar - second most common species
  • Calliphora vomitoria - quite rare

Symptoms

  • Agitation and dejection - foot stamping, vigorous shaking, gnawing or rubbing of the tail and breech.
  • Odour - as infestation develops a distinctive smell is noticeable. Wool becomes matted and discoloured.
  • Wool is shed - if infestations remain untreated, the affected area increases from the centre, accompanied by constant discomfort.
  • The smell of infestation attracts more flies – if unchecked, further infestations of flies can result in a quick and agonising death.

CLiK®
CLiK® Pour-on, containing dicyclanil, offers unparalleled season long cover1, no matter how severe the blowfly challenge. One application provides 16 weeks' protection saving time, effort and labour.

No blowfly strike preventative is longer lasting.

CLiK®'s unique FleeceBind™ technology binds tightly to the grease in wool to give full body cover for a full 16 weeks. CLiK® is at least 30 times more potent against blowfly than Vetrazin.

The effectiveness of CLiK®
CLiK® is a blowfly specific IGR (insect growth regulator) and has a narrow spectrum of activity. SCOPS (Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep) recommend the use of narrow spectrum products to minimise the risk of lice, tick or scab mite resistance developing.
40 day meat withhold period.

Timing
CLiK® for lambs
Applied in spring CLiK® protects the majority of lambs until marketing.
Treating young lambs is the most cost-effective way to protect against blowfly strike.

5L of CLiK® treats 250 10-20kg lambs as opposed to 200 21-30kg lambs – that's 20% more value.

CLiK® off-shears
CLiK® solves the problem of late blowfly challenge due to unpredictable weather.
One treatment after shearing covers the majority of sheep until season end.
CLiK® can be applied to any length of wool so farmers can shear then treat shortly afterwards.

More cost-effective

  • CLiK® provides more doses per pack than Vetrazin®. A 5L pack of CLiK® will treat 200 30kg lambs whereas a 5L pack of Vetrazin® or Crovect® will only treat 166.

Benefits over sheep dip

  • Convenient - apply single handed wherever sheep are.
  • Ready-to-use, no complicated dilution or mixing.
  • No need for fixed equipment.
  • No wastage or dipwash disposal regulations.
  • The risk of environmental pollution is minimised unlike dipping, no Certificate of Competence required.
  • CLiK® is well tolerated by sheep and offers a high safety margin.

Application

  • CLiK® is not designed to cure existing strike so treat animals before an anticipated fly challenge.
  • CLiK® is effective on all classes of sheep and all wool types.
  • Dry or damp sheep can be treated with a forecast period of dry weather for a few hours after application.
  • Do not treat wet animals.
  • CLiK® quickly binds to fleece and has been developed to be as rainfast as possible.
  • Make sure to give the right dose for the weight of animal. Weigh a few of the heaviest animals in the group and treat all to this heaviest dose. If the spread of weights in the group is large, split into weight banded groups.
  • Always use the proper Elanco Pour-on Gun with fan spray nozzle.

Application Method
Hold the gun 45cm away from the sheep. Make sure you deliver a minimum 10cm wide spray band. Ensure the spray falls evenly on each side of the backbone. Spray falling to one side only will result in loss of protection on the other side of the fleece.
Four Stroke Application
To ensure an accurate spread of CLiK® apply the total required dose one quarter at a time:

¼ of dose from mid-shoulders to middle of back
¼ of dose from middle of back to top of tail
¼ of dose to one side of animal's tail and crutch
¼ of dose to other side of animal's tail and crutch
